New Nintendo 3DS XL

Favorite Games: Same as 3DS, Super Smash Bros 3DS.

This is where the 3DS got even better... I think?

There are some problems with this device, let's talk about that first. First of all, while the specs got a good upgrade, it is barely utilized in most games.

Certain 3DS games released after 2014 require a restart if they run on a normal 3DS but have received some upgrade for the new 3DS, an example would be Super Smash Bros 3DS. Some N3DS exclusive games were released such as Fire Emblem Warriors which feature impressive graphics for the device, however most of these games were rereleased on the Switch or another device. They are not worth it, Minecraft however is pretty interesting to see running on a 3DS. The extra small joystick (C-stick) feels really weird, I haven't utilised it yet in games. It is used in Minecraft iirc. The automatic face tracking for 3D is really nice but only works at certain distance, I know some friends who almost shove their heads against the screen just to play some games, but if you like 3D this won't do at this size. It works better with the smaller 3DS's, or you should disable 3D if you like that. The DPI is very low for this size too meaning that it is too easy to see pixels on this screen. Unfortunately this model comes with two TN screens, and no IPS screen, but it still has good colors.

Now the good stuff! The face tracking is very very good, if you hold the device in front of you of course, there could be some problems if it is placed on a table and you are not looking at it straight, but who does that? After all the automatic face tracking makes this complete.

The automatic brightness works really wel, but not if something is really close to the sensor. When this happens, the screen's brightness goes all the way up which is quite annoying in dark rooms (probably due to the sensor collecting light from the screen when something is front of it allowing some screen light through).

The extra processing power allows to quickly shutdown apps and open them.

The 3D effect works even better and more intense on this device.

Due to it's size, the device is quite large for a handheld device (not much compared to the Nintendo Switch though) and holding it with one hand could become heavy over time. In fact, this is the largest DS ever released! It's bigger than the Nintendo DSi XL and the good thing is, it lasts longer on the battery due to this size in DS games. For 3DS games it lasts much longer than other 3DS devices such as the original 3DS, the original 3DS XL and the standard New 3DS.

The thing I like the most about this device, would be the style. It comes in the PAL SNES style with the corresponding SNES button colors on the right. For standard New 3DS devices, this is a normal color, however the New 3DS XL versions did by default not come with this color layout for the buttons. Most of the special / limited edition New 3DS XL devices come with uniform colors on the buttons (except for the NTSC SNES edition) and only the letters on the buttons have these colors. Same goes for the default N3DS XL variants.

There were some other design changes made, such as the rounder shape compared to the original models and the information leds being at another position. The speakers seem to be improved a little bit. The audio jack remains in the center and the cradle for this device looks quite weird and when there's no 3DS in it, it's easy to push it away. The cradle has an opening for the message led. The pen is very identical to the Nintendo DS again, but rounder to fit with the round design. I still prefer the original stylus due to being able to stretch it.

The cartridges are now inserted in front instead of in the back. The spot now contains a charging port. This makes the front look weird, I don't know why this decision was made. It could be to prevent users from accidentally pressing the cartridge back when it was position there? Never happend to me though, but it wouldn't suprise me if some party pooper would do this to someone.
