GameBoy Advance SP

Favorite games: Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World, Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3.

This was the first handheld I ever played on. There were two versions of the device, one with a more vibrant screen and no backlight bleeding. Both here shown on the picture are AGS-001's which are the first model, the backlight bleed is so bright I think it could be used as a flashlight in the dark! This can be seen in the second picture which was taken without the lamp on my phone. The first GameBoy SP I have (the pearl blue one) has traveled a lot along with me, especially when I was young!

I often played SMA2: SMW a lot and this game was one of the major inspirations that made me experience that so many things could be possible within in videogame! I played this game for the first time in 2006, and after not having played this game for quite a while because of my Nintendo DS and Xbox 360, I completely finished this game in 2012, I still remember the exact moment and location when I finished this game!

That was the same year I got introduced to SMA4: SMB3, which I finished the same year I got this game. This was also one of the best 2D Mario games I ever played, unfortunately the EU version of the device did not ship with E-Reader levels and they could only be accessed in the US and JP versions. However before the Nintendo E-Shop closed on the 3DS and Wii-U, it was possible to get this game and still access these levels in the EU region. I'm glad I bought this game on there before it closed!

Around 2008 or 2009, my first model was lost somewhere, but after it was found a year later and it got really dirty and was barely cleanable. Not quickly after it was found, the screen stopped working, the backlight still works though.

Around 2016 I was lucky to buy a Mario edition GBA-SP from an acquaintance at school for a great price along with two games and a charging cable. The screen still works!

The GameBoy Advances contain two ports on the back: There's a charging port (EXT2) and a special port for accessories (EXT1) such as the Audio Jack, Link cable and the GameCube GameBoy Advance Cable.

The audio quality wasn't the best on the devices and their games due to limitations, but it still has some nostalgic feel to it.

At last, I think it is an extremely well designed handheld console! Its clamshell look has inspired so many animation and game studio's design's fake consoles, it really became an iconic design for handhelds along with the DS and PSP and Switch!
